We according to our plan and with two other comrades had sailed in safety across the channel. But mistaking our bearings we steered into Jersey, think that the island was the French coast. Unfortunately, we were perceived in that island, and they delivered up to the authorities. The death punishment is being reserved for Christoph and me; the sentence for two was accordingly commuted to flogging because we interceded for them when we were captured. A Prominent Individual Benjamin Franklin was a very prominent figure in shaping our nation. Many people look at him as a role model or just as an amazing individual. He had his faults just like every human being had, and he shouldn’t be discredited because of a few minor glitches to his character. As being the only person that had signed The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Treaty of Paris, this immediately separates him from all others. One of the things that he wrote about in Benjamin Franklin: The Autobiography and Other Writings, was trying to be the ideal person, and even made a list of virtues to live by. His virtues were very important to his lifestyle, and he followed them to a great extent.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of his important virtues was humility. It was simply stated: â€Å"Imitate Jesus and Socrates.† From the beginning of Franklin’s life, when he went to grammar school he was always interested in learning. His father took him from grammar school and his next move was to be an apprentice to his brother as a printer. With undying love for knowledge he continued to learn how to read and write well. â€Å"From a child I was fond of reading, and all the little money that came into my hands was ever laid out in books† (Franklin 13). He continually got books from other print shops and stores to read on the side of working. One of the writings that touched him the most was the Socratic dialogue that he read in the back of a grammar book that he borrowed. He continued his research on Socrates, and therefore the Socratic method became a driving force in his beliefs. That is why he states that we should ‘Imitate Jesus and Socrates’. Their views must have some basis in common in order for him to look up to them that much.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"My intentions were to acquire the Habitude of all these virtues, I judg’d it would be well not to distract my attention by attempting the whole at once, but to fix it one of them at a time, and when I should be master of that, then proceed to another, and so on till I should have gone thro’ the thirteen† (Franklin 93). He believes that if he masters all of these virtues that he will become the perfect individual. If humility is the thirteenth one, than it must be the most important one in his life, or at least a closure to a perfect lifestyle. He made a book in which he allotte... ...t. Franklin learned very much in his life, maybe even more than he taught to others. Franklin has a method of teaching that I believe is a proper way of getting ideas across. â€Å"Do as I say, not as I do.† I feel that this statement alone totally defeats the characterization of Franklin being a hypocrite. The flaws in Franklin’s character should not be analyzed as closely as some look at them. It is all part of a learning process, which he has passed on to us as readers.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many of the setbacks that Ben Franklin has had in his life are looked at by some people to be considered flaws that contribute to hypocrisy. He was a great individual, maybe not perfect, but he did many things for the well being of our nation. He is one of the frontrunners of modern society with his inventions and discoveries. His experiments go beyond the major things such as electricity, every thing that he has done in his life was an experiment. He tried to be the perfect individual and a teacher of perfection. I think he did a very good job of accomplishing his goals and we should look up to him as being not only a down to earth person, but also a person that has risen to supremacy.

Tomorrow is a Fresh Start

Any day has the opportunity to be a good one as well as any day has the opportunity to be a bad one. Each individual day is on its own, having no relation to any previous day. Those days where it just keeps dragging on, and you can’t wait for the sun to rise in the morning to have a fresh start. This dreadful day has finally come to an end, but nothing picks you up more than the sunrise the next morning. The sunrise is saying that it is a new day, and is giving you an opportunity to either put the previous day behind you, or keep it with you and make the most out of your past experiences.Even though we look at the sunrise as just the sun rising above the horizon, there is much more to this action that not only affects us day to day, but for a lifetime. There are many times where you are not looking forward to the sunrise the next morning. It could be because of a big project due the next day, a test, or just going on with your unamusing life. Going to school is a big part in n ot wanting to get up in the morning. You may think that you are the only one who dreads waking up and having to take three tests, then run around the gym for 25 minutes, but you’re not alone.Many thoughts come into your mind on trying to figure out why you have to take these actions. You ask yourself; when will I ever use algebra in real life, why do I need to know what the 17th amendment is, or wonder what good it will do to know the capital of Zimbabwe. Everyone is forced to take these actions whether or not you think they are necessary. If laying in your bed for days was an option, everyone would take the easy road out. Some people go with this option and end up not making anything of themselves, because they are lazy and avoid any sort of challenge.Those who choose to get up, know where they would rather be, but are accepting any future challenges. When you finally do decide to get up in the morning and see the sunrise, you get that feeling in your gut that is really hopi ng for the day to just be over. Many emotions can come from the action of the sun rising, which happens every 24 hours. You know that there is nothing you can do to stop it, but will do everything in your power to avoid it. A sunrise can and should be looked at as a positive action.. It can be looked at as another day to add to your accomplishments, or to start over on a clean slate.When you wake up in the morning and the sun is slowly rising, an excitement occurs as the new day is approaching. Every day comes with a new challenge. This could be a big test, a championship game, or something as simple as buying a new dress for a special occasion. Many people are afraid . Some of these obstacles you may want to avoid or pass on to another day, but the sunrise is helping you conquer that obstacle. As the day of October 29th was coming to an end, I could not wait for the the sun to rise. There was so much that was going on the next day. I could barely sleep; all I wanted was it to be th e next day.When the sun finally rose, my birthday had arrived. I jumped out of my bed in excitement because this day had all the right tools to be perfect. I had a big soccer game going on, a nice lunch made for me, and no big test or quizzes going on during the day. Everything was going great until I looked outside for a moment. The sun was gone, and the moon had taken its place. I didn’t want this day to end. I was unsure on what the next day would lead to. As I thought about the day coming to an end more, I realized that the unknowingness is the best part of a new day.It may be bad, but I will never know what will happen unless I accept the sunrise. I woke up the next morning unamused to start the new day, knowing that it will not compare to the what had happened yesterday. But I did go in with an open mind, and ended up receiving hand fulls of candy. Not only was is Halloween, but the day had a positive vibe to it, that I never would’ve expected. If I had keep my m ind in the past and only focused on what had happened the day before, none of this could’ve happened. One specific sunrise that not only myself but everyone involved had mixed feelings about is the day of and after graduation.We have seen our peers go through it, and never imagined ourselves being in that situation. Some will look at the sunrise as it all coming to an end, and others will look at it as a new beginning. I am unsure on what my reaction will be when this day comes but know that I am forever grateful for everything that I have learned prior to this anticipated sunrise. This is one that can not be avoided, no matter how hard you try. When the sun rises on that perfect night, all of our lives will change. It won’t be instantly, but over time that sunrise will forever affect how we are as people.

People tend to be blinded by the truth at times. Usually, the solution to their question is right under their nose and yet, still can’t see the answer. Blinded by the truth is what they call it. Many associations between being blind and enlightened have been made. It has been said that a blind person have the ability to see invisible things. They are able to â€Å"see† into the future. Though they don’t have physical sight, they still have another type of vision. In the play Sophocles’ King Oedipus, Teiresias, the blind prophet, told King Oedipus and Queen Jocasta the truth. Oedipus have been blinded his whole life about the truth and when he finally realizes the truth, he physically blinds himself. Even though the prophet lacked the ability to actually see in the physical world, he s till had the skill to see through a person heart, a skill that nearly cost him his life after trying to enlighten Oedipus. King Oedipus started his life with a fate that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Trying to prevent this fate from actually happening, Oedipus parents, Laius and Jocasta sent him to the mountains when he was born to die. However, their mission failed when a shepherd found Oedipus and saved him. The shepherd passed Oedipus to Polybus and Merope. When he got older and learned of his prophecy, he ran away thinking that they were his biological parents. On his journey, he ran into Laius and ended up killing him. Continuing his journey, he answered the riddle of the evil Sphinx and became the king of thebes. After becoming king of the kingdom, he married Jocasta. He basically lived out his fate that he never knew he had. The city of Thebes began to go through tough times and the prophet said it was the polluter of the lands. Oedipus called Teiresias and Teiresias told him that the polluter was the King. As Oedipus searched deeper, he realized that he was the polluter and that his fate has come true. Math and Music: An Introduction and Mathematical Analysis Galileo Galilei once said that the entire universe is â€Å"written in the language of mathematics†. Then, it is not surprising to learn that music is closely related to math. The mathematical application in music will be discussed in this essay. Rhythm and Frequency To understand the relation between math and music, the primary step is to study the nature of rhythm, frequency and amplitude. Everything around us has its own pattern of rhythm, from the motion of protons and neutrons, to the beats in rock music. According to Garland (1995), rhythm is determined by the periodicity of vibration of certain object in its surrounding substance, or medium (p. 28). Garland (1995) stated, frequency is a term that describes the number of waves, or vibrations, that pass a given point per second (p. 28). It is inversely proportional to the wavelength, which is the distance of one wave cycle. Frequency can be evaluated in the pitch of a tone: a higher pitch has a higher frequency. A simple tone has constant frequency and amplitude, and its graph is similar to a sine curve. Tones that are more complic ated result from combinations of several simple curves. The smallest pure tone frequency in complex tunes is called fundamental frequency. Integer multiples of the fundamental frequency make the resultant tone musical. The graph below shows the frequency data from A3 to A4 key. Note that A4 key has twice as much frequency as A3 key, because any two keys that are one octave apart have the frequency ratio of 2:1. Many parts of UK have been flooded after heavy storms in recent years. The government has announced  £120m of funding for flood defences, as households across Britain contend with the aftermath of heavy storms. Ministers estimate that the money, which will be delivered between next year and 2015, will improve flood protection for up to 60,000 homes. It comes just days after about 800 UK homes were flooded in recent storms. Labour said it shows how shortsighted the government was to cut investment In flood defences by  £95m a year. Some  £60m of the new funding would be targeted at areas where improving defences against flooding could unlock investment and growth in the area, ministers said. And the rest would go to speed up delivery of up to 50 schemes already promised.
